data integrations

Electricity data integrations in Italy for energy optimisation

Your guide to seamless data integrations

In public and commercial buildings, 10–30% of energy is wasted. This can be due to appliances running beyond their scheduled times, unnoticed damage to photovoltaic systems, and many other reasons. Integrating consumption and production data is essential to improve energy management. The meters used to measure your consumption collect much more data than what you see on your invoice, and accessing this data opens up a world of opportunities. This guide shows you how to access and integrate data on your energy usage for various energy sources and from different Italian energy carriers. With Ento, you can easily export and analyse your consumption and solar production data, helping you reduce waste, save money, and lower emissions. Have you also installed additional monitoring systems? Ento can help you analyse energy data from these systems as well. Find out more at the end of the guide.

In Italy, each municipality has an assigned energy distributor responsible for recording  electricity data In mostl Italian municipalities, this distributor is e-Distribuzione. However, some cities, like Milan and Brescia,  use a different distributor, Unareti.

Anyone with an electricity account in a municipality served by a specific distributor has the right to access their energy data through that distributor's portal.

This data is often highly detailed, providing consumption and production information in 15-minute intervals for the past 18 months.  In many cases, the data is updated every day.

Q:

What does it cost to get access to data?

A:

Access to your data is free.

Q:

How can I use the data to create value for my organisation?

A:

You can't improve something that you can't measure. Access to your electricity consumption data and photovoltaic production data is essential for effective energy management, leading to cost savings and increased sustainability. In fact, 10–30% of energy consumption in public and commercial buildings could be avoided.

These energy wastes can be easily reduced without major investments – simply by turning off unused systems and performing regular maintenance.

The challenge lies in identifying them. For this, consumption and production data can be analysed with specialised l algorithms, like those used by Ento’s Solar Advisor.

Additionally, this data allows you to evaluate the impact of possible redevelopment interventions and energy saving measures, helping you to generate a decarbonisation strategy for your building portfolio with tools like Ento Strategy.

Q:

What is the data suited for?

A:

Q:

How do I get access to the data?

A:

Creating an account on your distributor’s portal is easy, and Ento can help you do it in even less time.

You can download your data yourself, but this becomes time-consuming if you have many users. Furthermore, analysing data is complex, because consumption naturally varies due to factors like seasonality, weather, time of the day, and day of the week.

Ento can take care of downloading the data from your portal and perform independent analysis to identify energy waste, giving you all the benefits of advanced insights without the effort. Onboarding takes just 10 minutes, and within the same week, we can review the analysis of your buildings and photovoltaic systems together.

Onboard gas data from utilities in Italy

Gas consumption data is recorded by the gas distributor, which may vary depending on the users’ location. The largest gas distributors in Italy by number of users are Italgas, 2i Rete Gas, Inrete, and Unareti.

Anyone with an account on the distributor’s platform has the right to view consumption data, often with access to daily gas usage history for their supply.

Q:

What does it cost to get access to data?

A:

Access to your data is free.

Q:

How can I use the data to create value for my organisation?

A:

Effective energy management relies on accurate measurement. Access to detailed consumption data is essential for reducing costs and improving sustainability, especially considering that up to a third  of energy use in public and commercial buildings is often avoidable.

These consumptions can be easily cut without extraordinary investments: by turning off unused systems and intervening promptly with ordinary maintenance.

The challenge lies in identifying waste. Tools like Ento’s Gas Advisor can automatically differentiate between normal consumption patterns and anomalies, flagging usage that deviates from a building’s historical consumption data day of the week, season, or outside temperature.

Additionally, this data allows you to evaluate the impact of possible redevelopment interventions and energy saving measures, helping you to generate a decarbonisation strategy for your building portfolio with tools such as Ento Strategy.

Creating an account on your distributor’s portal is simple, and Ento can assist to make it even faster.

While you can manually download your data, this can become time-consuming if you manage multiple user accounts.. Furthermore, data analysis is complex, because consumption naturally varies with factors like season, weather, or day of the week.

Ento simplifies this process by automatically retrieving your data from the portal and conducting independent analysis to identify waste, giving you the benefits of advanced insights without the effort.

We often collaborate with distributors like Italgas and Unareti but can support most of Italy’s major providers.

Monitoring of other data sources and energy carriers

Ento can also support the monitoring of additional data sources, including:

  • Water
  • District heating
  • Electricity consumption from submeters, EMS, and BMS
  • Gas from submeters and other information systems
  • PV production via inverter data
  • Air quality data through indoor sensors

Water and district heating consumption data can be challenging to access. If your distributor or supplier provides monthly or more frequent consumption data, Ento can deliver advanced analysis as it does for thousands of buildings in Europe.

In Italy, many large building owners have installed sub-meters. While Ento does not provide hardware, we support seamless integration with these systems using standard protocols such as SFTP or API. This approach ensures that building owners retain ownership of their hardware and avoid dependency on a particular supplier.

Q:

What does it cost to get access to data?

A:

Accessing and sharing data from hardware suppliers can be free, but some vendors may charge a setup or annual fee. Overall, implementing an Energy Control Layer (ECL) is a relatively cost-effective way to operate a building efficiently. Q:

How can I use the data to create value for my organisation?

A:

Integrating energy data from sub-meters unlocks new opportunities for energy optimisation. With Ento’s Solar Advisor, you can enhance efficiency and develop a robust long-term energy strategy that is tailored to your building portfolio.

Ento Strategy also simplifies ESG reporting, aligning with sustainability goals. If you have an Energy Control Layer (ECL), this integration enables intelligent management of your HVAC systems through Ento Control, optimising comfort and efficiency across your facilities

Q:

How do I get access to the data?

A:

If you’ve already installed sub-meters, start by asking your supplier how to export the data, or reach out to us at Ento. Setting up an SFTP server with Ento takes only a few minutes, making it a quick solution to test connectivity with your existing hardware.

We can also work with data exports in Excel or CSV formats, create API integrations, or even set up bots to automatically extract data from your platform when needed.
